The mirror as a theme in the visual arts has existed for more than 3000 years, artists liked to represent people from behind facing a mirror so that the viewer can have a vision of the face of the person being painted. They wanted to give the illusion that their painting was real and try to achieve maximum fidelity to their subject.

The first mirrors were surely the stretches of calm water, which offered a slightly cloudy and erased shimmer of what was reflected there, then polished and shiny stones allowed man to see his own image.
