Is it out of ego? My answer is simply: no!
We often want to see what I look like, what physique I have on a daily basis, well there you have it, I look like that, that's what I am!
The self-portrait is the most familiar, the most characteristic aspect of an artist, the most faithful, since it is produced by the one who ultimately knows himself best. But it is also the reflection of his image, of how he saw himself at a specific moment in a short period of his life.
We can feel social reality or even a life through self-portraits, but also invent them, just as we would when meeting an unknown person on the bend of an alley. A personal judgment which can sometimes be very right and other times wrong. And it shows that I am capable of creating a detailed representation of myself. I have a little anatomical know-how, necessary to achieve this.
A bit also a way of becoming a sort of work of art somewhere.
